Rockport

Once a railroad town, Rockport is now a key park and trail access point in Lehigh Gorge State Park. In 1819, the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company (LC&N) purchased rich timber holdings in the area around what is now the village of Rockport.  The company built four sawmills and in the ensuing decades, more saw and grist mills sprang up on other tributary streams in the Lehigh Gorge.

Today you’ll find one of the oldest (ca. 1838-40) and smallest hard-rock railroad tunnels here.  It was part of the Buck Mountain Gravity Railroad system.

In 1884, the Lehigh Valley Railroad’s final tunnel was completed. Known as the Rockport Tunnel, it’s the longest (1100’), active tunnel along the line and is located about one mile east of town on the east side of the Lehigh River.
