East Penn - Lehigh Gap

Status: Unimproved open, travel at your own risk

The Basics:  This section follows a former railroad bed between the East Penn Boat Launch and a new trailhead at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center.  Users enjoy views of the Lehigh River and the steep slopes of the Kittatinny Ridge, as well as bog and pond habitat and plenty of wildlife.  The Lehigh Gap Nature Center is the site of an innovative restoration project to return a Superfund site to a thriving native plant ecosystem.  The Center also maintains a network of mountainside footpaths that link the D&L Trail to the ridge-running Appalachian Trail.

The Details:  Although not officially improved, this section of trail is accessible by foot and with fat-tire bikes.  In most places, the ballast is compact and easy to ride.  In a few remaining spots, loose ballast or water can make for difficult riding.  The Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s LNE Trail follows the upper rail bed and has a smoother riding surface.  This section is slated for a new trail surface in 2010, which will resolve remaining condition issues.
