The Basics: This relatively isolated section of trail connects Freemansburg and Hugh Moore Park. Located along the former canal prism, the only sounds users will hear is the flowing Lehigh River and the songs of birds. The remnants of canal infrastructure are scattered along the path, and a close-up view of chain dam and Island Park is one highlight of the trip. The main offices of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor are located in Hugh Moore Park.
The Details: From Freemansburg, this section follows the earthen canal towpath to the Bethlehem Boat Club property, just west of the Rt. 33 highway bridge. At that point, trail users must head north for a dozen yards or so to reach a gravel access road. Following the access road east will bring users to the Rt. 33 boat access. Continue east to reach the paved Palmer Township Bike Path, which runs on a former railroad bed. The trail continues on this bed until reaching Riverside Park. Currently, trail users should use Lehigh Drive to access the Glendon River Bridge (not the 25th Street bridge) and cross into Hugh Moore Park.
