The Basics: This section follows the canal towpath from the town of Weissport to a dead end, across the river from Jim Thorpe. A new trailhead in Weissport provides parking and access to this section. The trail offers views of the river, the trout-filled canal, lock and building remnants, and forested mountain slopes.
The Details: The 2.7 miles north of the trailhead were recently resurfaced and are in excellent condition for biking and walking. The rest of the trail is bikable and walkable but with a more rugged surface. Currently, the trail dead ends at the Jim Thorpe waste water treatment plant, and there is no access to Jim Thorpe or points north. A proposed pedestrian bridge to link this section with downtown Jim Thorpe is currently in the design phase.
