The Basics: This section of trail follows the canal towpath to the north and south of Walnutport. To the north, users will catch glimpses of the river and the remnants of locks. Where the canal and river meet, a small peninsula provides a unique view of the the Lehigh Gap. On the southern side of Walnutport, trout and muskrat troll the wide waters of the canal. Don’t miss the remains of the old aqueduct at Bertsch Creek.
The Details: The trail surface is earthen towpath that makes for easy and smooth riding. Users can access this section from the Walnutport Canal Association’s trailhead. The trail runs north to Lehigh Gap (just south of the Rt. 248 bridge) before the canal towpath terminates. The trail is open 2.5 miles south of the Walnutport trailhead, before running into private property south of Bertsch Creek. The only way to travel north or south on the D&L Trail is to cross the river to Slatington.
