The Stockton Mine Disaster was one of the tragic consequences of deep mining a subsidence which on occasion had terrible results.  Mining too close to the surface probably caused a subsidance during which several homes at this site were swallowed in the early morning hours of December 18, 1869.  Twelve people died in the disaster.  Their bodies were never recovered.  Monument and marker only.
