Near this spot on Sept 11, 1780, a detachment of 41 men of Captain John Van Etten’s Company of the Northampton County militia paused to rest at a fresh water spring. They were surprised by a bond of Sene Indianas and Tories led by Chief Roland Montour. Fourteen members of the militia were killed and three captured. Many Revolutionary War Veternas who campained in this area returned after the war and were among the regions first settlers.
